Prambors vs. Gen FM

Specific groups of radio listeners might protest me putting the title of "Prambors vs. Gen FM" above. One of the arguments will possibly be on how the well-established Prambors which has a highly conceptualized taste of music could be compared with the young, immature music choice of Gen FM?

If you one of the protesters, please continue reading.

People in general would prefer to listen to popular music which is familiar with their ears. Pop songs are the most on this. This genre shoots the common people who use the radio and listen to it as a way to get entertained during the driving time, or simply just to have fun with time. These people could be variant in terms of age, financial capability and educational background. They, mostly, do not have specific, or specialized taste of music, except it is easy listening. And most of these people if I could say, will choose Gen FM as their chosen radio.

Its was in the Carrefour Permata Hijau when i did shopping on the weekend. Gen FM was being played in that big, giant retailer while the costumers were choosing goods around. Another in Alfa Srengseng, nearby my house, when I stopped by just to grab some, again, it's Gen FM again. Then in the fruit market at Palmerah, Gen was heard there. Both my sisters-in-law who are university students, love Gen a lot. Each time I scroll to the other stations, soon they 'make it right' to suit the everyone's ears. Is Gen that soooo popular????

I used to listen to that, because it has a specialized taste of music. Prambors stands confidently on its own faith that its vision in music ensures its survival in radio industry. I would say that Prambors has personality : brave to shine on its choice of color. This reflects on the programs. I refer to the weekly program in which it introduces the indie's songs. One of the song which was ever played frequently was "Persahabatan Bagai Kepompong"!

It was like one month or two before this song is repeatedly by the other music stations in town. It was in Prambors, and it was Prambors that drewn it into the attention of common people. It helped turn it into the area which everyone or public centers their attention to, while everyone initially did not care of at all.

And what happens next? When that song is now being popular, and always played everywhere. But Prambors stops playing it and looks for the other ones to introduce again. This is what I call "we need it today, you need it tomorrow". Some programs are specificly-oriented and different from the common sense. It tries to think 'out of the box' or business unusul. Such a unique philosophy which common people would not notice. Common people, in terms of music taste, tend to capture things only in the surface. They do not take the philosophical concept into account. This is what Prambors do not do and in contrast, the Gen does.

As Prambors established in 1971, it entails a concept, faith and philosophy to survive and compete. In its more than 4 decades of exixtance, it must experince ups and downs of the industry to keep on going.

Now, the question is, which one will survive?the ones with philosophical belief or the one with follows the public taste? I would argue, when you listen to the radio for a long time, the specialized one would suit you. The speciaized one could satisfy and fulfill what you are actually looking for by listening to the radio. Now, people tend to be more democratic, and to express freely what in their mind and souls are. They will probably be more to stand on their own characters, including in music taste. The personality which suits their taste of music will win their heart.

Zooming Pluralism through Yoga

Most moderate Muslims are surprised hearing that yoga exercise is banned by the National Fatwa Council of Malaysia. Some probably think of what basis makes this forbidden and why? Some people might be thinking about how the yoga exercise could lead to the wrong faith or polytheism? To see it more clearly, let us examine the traditional values of yoga and how we, as moderate moslems, should respond to the ban.

Yoga refers to traditional physical and mental discipline, originating in India. Yoga is one of the six elements of Hinduism philosophy (Wikipedia). Originally, yoga is aimed at uniting with nature or with God to arrive at the world of harmony. It aimed at relieving stress, controlling mind and setting up a peaceful feeling inside body and soul, to be close to God. In practice, yoga has been a kind of life style, and popular among the urbans. In Indonesia, yoga has been booming since 1998 as some people see it as a way to get out from stress and frustration.

Even its origin is rooted from the Hinduism philosophy, the teachings as well as the exercise do not involve any religious beliefs or faith to God. The way of doing yoga is mainly through meditation in silence. The activity of yoga mainly emphasizes in the body posture and control over body organs. The meditation is conducted through the ways to centralize mind, concentrate and acquire peace.

Before Malaysia issued the controversial ban on yoga, Egypt and Singapore Islamic bodies had long declared yoga as haraam (Wikipedia), as the values are originated from Hinduism. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), as a response to the Fatwa, plan to do inspections to yoga centers around the country. MUI clerics from the MUI regency, city and province offices will be seeing through the Muslims taking yoga class and observe whether or not there is an indication to the blasphemy.

Related to the Malaysia’s ban on yoga, there is underlying notion on why Malaysia reacts so responsively to the issue. Besides the growing influence of conservative Muslims there, the cause of the reactive response displays how Malaysia misunderstand towards the evolution of the aspects in yoga. This should be noticed by Indonesia’s clerics. The first impression of the Indonesian clerics so far is that they will follow what their neighbouring clerics do towards yoga ; examining how yoga could corrupt the faith.

Seeing its root and assimilation with the other cultures (Hinduism phiosophy), yoga is now more likely a mere sport.

Indonesia has been a nation, consisting of around 600 tribes, with their own local cultures and languages. The culture is mixed up with the ones from Arabic, Chinese and India. There are 3 foreign cultures inside the melting pot, means there Islam, Kong Hu Chu and Hindu inside, consecutively. The local and the foreign collaborates, then assimilates to form new cultures and while at the same time keeps the original visible. Such a anique process. If you compare with Malaysia, which has only 3 tribes, 3 languages and a flat experience of nation-building, Indonesia is much diverse in terms of pluralism and multietchnic, multicultural tradition.

To notice, the preaching of Islam coming from the Arab world was using the method of embracing the local cultures : assimilating with the local cultures which are rooted from the Hinduism. The use of Wayang as the method of spreading the values of Islam was one of the examples. What happened then? There was no such a crash between the two.

Indonesia has a long history towards multiculturalism and pluralism including on how to cope with the differences : tribes, languages, cultures, attitudes and way of thinking. The pathways of the country to come to its independence have been a long process : uniting the people from Sabang to Mareuke, tying up the obedient Javanese and the 'bad boys' of Papua, and keeping together the Islamic western Indonesia and the Christian eastern one together. This singals that Indonesia is a big nation. This does not happen to Malaysia, which embraces quite a few differences inside and within its language system, local cultures and tribal contacts.

The history of Islam in here is very unique, might be the only biggest Muslim population, which could live side by side in harmony with the differences. This forms a way of thinking, builds perception and creates an open-minded insight towards a culture. The around 600 tribes, languages and cultures has colored the face of Indonesia, its raditions and point of view.

No wonder, the leaders of the world come to and learn from Indonesia, especially on how to settle conflict through mediation and peace process. Aceh Peace Agreement has been a study case to cope with the interreligious conflict in Southern Thailand, the separatist movement of Macan Tamil in Sri Lanka and the intrareligious communal conflict in Iraq.(http://indonesian.cri.cn/1/2007/09/11/1@71214.htm)

The potentials ( the assets) should be utilized to perceive the issue related to the cultural assimilation, like yoga. As it is sport, and a kind of healing for some sicknesses, yoga is positive, and does not harm belief and faith to the God. Checking on-site by the clerics will only show that MUI concerns would be too much, irrelevant, and not substantive to the threat of blasphemy.

the Kingdom

There are 3 (three) main points I would like to notice on the film 'Kingdom' (released in 2007). In overal, the aim of the film is mainly to look for a justification towards the US policy in the Middle East.

First of all, it promotes the use of violence and hard power to overcome and deal with the terrorism and terrorists. The approach is inappropriate, harmful and dangerous because that could affect the civilians, and create unnecessasy destruction. This could also be contra-productive towards the efforts to create peace. Second, that film says that the use of violence is more effective, and quicker than using the use of diplomatic means, negotiation and bilateral talks. This is then leads to the deployment of military officers or army, or in this case, secret agencts as the only way to do quick response. It is true that the US Government must protect their citizens, but this could lead to the unilateral action. This will only strengthen the image-branding of the US foreign policy towards the Middle-East countries, that US claims itself as the only police to save the people's lives!

Third of all, this film clearly sends message that the use of violence wins and above all, defeated the other means, including the use of non-violence. This erects the US standing on the Bush' priority to put the issue of security as the top list. This conforms the support of the Bush' approach to combat terrorism in Iraq and Afganistans, while at the same time, justifies the motion that those wars will be giving victory to Americans, and securing their interest in the regions.

What happens now? Most people in the world see the US Government as the one who love wars and violence to achieve goals. More importantly, more and more Americans feel terrified and dont feel more secure now.

Environmental-Friendly

Despite the slowing decline of exposure towards the issue of global warming, I promise you that the effects are racing with us and possibly will proceed and move faster than we think. So the awareness to the global threat should be one of our major concern in daily life.

This morning I managed to distribute the meeting invitations for all staff in the office. As the spirit of 'go green' covers me, I just find it enjoyable to use the another side of papers. The papers are still good, come out from our fax machine, which I dont know how, each time we fail sending one, the machine will put out a report on that. The report takes the blank paper available in the tray. This is happening all the time. You could imagine how many we got now, and the papers are there. Useless.

I get all staff the invitations, but still use the good paper for the higher official, simply not because Im 'afraid', but its just one way to respect of them as they deserve it.

But Mbak Rina makes jokes, why she, as the staff, feels being discriminated by the different papers I give her and her boss :D

I cant stand laughing at when seeing my colleagues read carefully the invitations, while at the same time I am looking at the back side of that invitation. Might be when they get back to their room, and find it using the blank side, they will straightly put it in the rubbish bin! Perfect!

It's not about sexy

Last Idul Fitri holiday was terrific! My big family gathered, laughed and enjoyed all moments during the holiday.

And it was in Solo, where we visited the wife of my husband's nephew, who just delivered a baby girl several days before. Before we arrived, everyone in the car were talking about the newly baby born. This blew waves of heat into my ears, made me wanna jumpout of the talking people!
Trying to smile very nicely, congratulating her. Touched the baby's cheek and said "ooohhhh sooo cute!". People enjoyed watching the baby's act : doing nothing, sleep well.

There was nothing wrong, until I heard from my mother-in-law which suddenly made my lips locked, and stiff. She simply congratulated her for having a new role, as a mom which was such a blessing. But it affected me that much. The rest of me was full of jealousy. I was wrong : taking account of this from the pessimistic side, but my emotion was going out of control.

At that time there was a piece, something, away from me. That actually i was losing my confidence cos not yet perfect to be a woman and a wife.

There's no such pressure from outside of me to have a baby. Today. Yesterday or perhaps tomorrow. And my mother-in-law didn' make any mistakes by saying that. Instead, its nice to hear that. But.. but.. *I'm starting to be illogical*

Today i talk with a friend of mine. She told me to have an adoption. Cant be apart from the little girl whom she phones everyday, just to say hello and how much love she wants to share with. She doesnt care of being pregnant, cos trying and hoping to have a baby inside your womb is about a miracle. Tired. I was debating whether or not an adoption is the best choice for her now. We come up to a conclusion, never stop trying with your husband *this is irrelevant argument for my case*

By the end, being a mom is not about to have a sexy feeling like I noticed before, but dedication and commitment to care of 24 hours a day, seven days in a week blah blah blah... Hohohohoho

then my husband phoned me. saying its fine, and just get relaxed...

my mother-in-law talked with me. pregnancy is just something unexpectable. u want, it doesnt happen. u dont want, the baby grows.
